He drifted then. Drifted on currents of memory, currents in which he saw her face, the woman he had loved and who had loved him. But hers was not the only face rising out of the deep. There were others. Many. The Eternals, his brethren, his mentors, his heroes. Their visages rising out of the dark waters upon which he floated like phantoms and that was right, for they were that, that and nothing else. They did not speak and that, too, was right, for the dead had no voices. They only watched him, their expressions unreadable. Not blank but unreadable, and there was a profound difference, for it seemed to him that those faces felt something, said something. Yet it was as if they spoke in a language he did not know, perhaps one that he could not know.

Were they ashamed of him? Were they proud? Indifferent? Loathing, disappointed, supportive? They could have been anything. They could have been nothing.

Dozens, hundreds of faces, their unreadable expressions floating before him, as if waiting for him to speak, but what would he say? What could he say to justify his actions for the last several days, how he had risked the entire world, a world which all the Eternals had given their lives to protect? How could he justify the last century?
